YOUNG STALIN

TEATR DRAMATYCZNY, WARSAW

About performance

The story of one of the biggest dictators of all time. The story of a young Stalin who kills people and robs banks for Lenin’s Bolshevik Party.

The old times have finished and new ones are just beginning in Europe. The young revolutionary, poet and un-graduated student priest sets out on a journey to find ‘his’ truth. It is an action-packed journey. With a fake passport and bombs going off the young Stalin robs banks for Lenin’s Bolshevik party and even kills people. His path leads him to Georgia, through Vienna, Krakow and London.

The idealist becomes a brute. The fighter against injustice becomes one of the biggest criminals of the last century.

The actual youth of Stalin - the usurper of the Soviet Union - has become an important leitmotif in this play by Polish artist Tadeusz Słobodzianek whose parents were themselves interned by Stalin's offices. A grotesque world is born on the internationally recognised Polish theatre’s stage in which the characters of world history treat their complexes and setbacks in their personal lives and reveal their sick ambitions, motivations and desire for power. What if there is a Stalin hidden in each of us?

With this atypical view of Stalin as a gangster the Slovak director brings us the significant and unique poetics of Ondrej Spisak, the father of the Teatra Tatra, who was festooned in Poland with the prestigious Felix theatre prize for directing his previous work Słobodziankovej hry Naša trieda.
