NATIONAL THEATRE, PRAGUE

About performance

A house as the main character. A house as a silent witness to human destinies since the advent of fascism, through the communist regime up until the recent past. The latest premiere from the Prague National Theatre.

The house has stood for sixty years. Unchanged, however altered by history, regimes, their leaders and its inhabitants . A silent witness. However, when a woman, her daughter and her mother make their return to the house, the layers of paint on the walls start peeling like union peel. The house thereby starts telling its story. The story of how a Jewish family had to sell the house in 1934. The story of how another family had to abandon the house in 1953 when fleeing to the west. And how the decedents of the good, virtuous people who had helped the Jewish family returned to the house in 1993. We witness how lies are handed doen from generation to generation and how long-standing family legends fall apart after forty years.

A unique play about new beginnings and old grievances that intertwine history with the present, from the pen of young German playwright Marius von Mayenburg.
