The Kubiš’s are vey inconspicuous to people, uncommitted, they care for their family, mindful of customs and traditions. They are also very flexible. The youngest son is a partisan; the elder son is a guardsman, their daughter an arinizer. They sit at the Christmas table with a Nazi, one hopeful visitor is a communist. The situation on the front is more and more uncertain; it is becoming clearer that the moment when one member of the family has to be sacrificed is approaching. What will they confess at the midnight mass?

This play by one of the most prominent Slovak playwrights of the last century takes place on Christmas Eve 1944. However it doesn’t glorify war heroes – it examines and analyzes in detail the attitudes of ordinary people concerning the dramatic events of the ending of World War II.
