About performance
How did a student protest become a revolution that changed the country’s history? Authentic testimony from Ukraine actors in honour of their colleagues murdered at Maidan.
No set, No music, no costumes and decorations. Seven actors face-to-face with you ask the following: Do you remember how Maidan started? Do you believe aggression can only be fought with aggression?
Documentary theatre with intimate and powerful testimonies currently stunning the European stage. The Maidan Diaries is the reaction of members of the "Ukrainian new drama" to the revolutionary events that were started by innocent student protests against the government of Viktor Yanukovych in winter 2013 and ended after a few winter months in massacres with dozens of victims. Kiev’s Independence Square – known as Maidan – became the centre and symbol of the protests – the place where barricades were erected and where thousands of demonstrators camped for one long winter.
The play features the living voices of Maidan heroes and anti-heroes: Protesting students, Cossacks, angry mothers, doctors, artists who dared to voice their opposition and also those who went from being civilians to being radical revolutionaries.
This play on the largest revolutionary event in Ukraine in recent years was created from dozens of hours of statement collection. The initiators have dedicated the piece to their colleague from the theatre - Andriy Movchanov – who was murdered at Maidan.
